Phyllis Schwartz

Born in Brooklyn, raised in Texas, educated in the Midwest, Phyllis Schwartz migrated to the Westcoast to pursue further studies. She taught school for over 30 years, infusing academic subjects with art activities while starting an artist practice after hours. Eventually she transformed that equation into a full time artist practice and guest teaching in artist residencies.

Artist Statement

I am a multidisciplinary artist who works in photography, ceramics, collage, and publishing. I received the Canon Photography Award after graduating from Emily Carr University with a concentration in photography. My work is in public, corporate, and private collections and has been installed, exhibited, and published locally, nationally, and internationally. I collaborate on publishing, curatorial, and photography projects with Edward Peck. Typically, we investigate community-based issues, which bring the community together. We were artists in residence at Wallace Stegner House in Eastend, Saskatchewan. This body of work was exhibited as Apeiron at Xchanges Art Gallery in 2023. I am currently a member of the Metchosin ArtPod, an artist collective dedicated to exhibition and ongoing art education; and the Agora's Experimental Photography Collective, an international collective that participated in the 2023 Experimental Photography Festival in Barcelona.
